Bill's Wild Rides in the Himalaya
Переглядів 453Рік тому
The Everest climbing season is right around the corner. The Icefall Doctors are fixing lines on the mountain and the teams will be arriving in Kathmandu in early April. I thought this would be a good time to reprise some unique video footage of Mt. Everest, Everest Base Camp, the Khumbu Icefall, Camp 1, the Western Cwm, Burke Khang and the fabled Himalaya mountain range. All of this footage was...

This is a video of my Pilgrimage walk on the Camino de Santiago in the Fall of 2022. I walked on the Camino Frances from St. Jean Pied de Port, France to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and then from Santiago de Compostela to the Atlantic Ocean. The total distance was 560 miles. I was joined in Astorga, Spain by my three daughters and one of my granddaughters who walked with me to Santiago de Co...
One Chip Challenge

Most of you who have followed my adventures know that I love hot sauce. This addiction began when I was a child. I now have one of the greatest hot sauce collections in the world. In my travels to every continent, I have never met anyone who can match my capacity for Scoville-inflicted pain. In 2021, the Paqui “One Chip Challenge” was issued. The Paqui chip combines ingredients from two of the ...

Mt Everest South Approach and North Approach Long

My goal was to climb Mt. Everest by both the South approach in Nepal and the North approach in Tibet. On my second attempt, at age 67, I reached the summit from the South approach on May 23, 2009, becoming the oldest American to reach the summit and return alive. After four attempts, at age 72, I reached the summit from the North approach on May 25, 2014. I broke my 2009 record and became the o...

My life goal was to climb Mt. Everest from the South Approach, which begins in Nepal, and the North Approach, which begins in Tibet. In 2009, at the age of 67, I summitted Mt. Everest from the South Approach and became the oldest American to reach the top of the world. In 2014, at the age of 72, I summited Mt. Everest from the North Approach, broke my Mt. Everest age record, and became the olde...

This 6 minute, 34 second video highlights the Mt. Everest South Approach and North Approach and offers lessons I have learned from the mountains. I prepared this video for an online presentation to Boy Scout Troop 616 in San Diego, California in March of 2021. A longer version of the South Approach and North Approach can be found in my You Tube channel.

    Who would want to go and camp amongst everyone else's shit, frozen piss, garbage, empty cylinders? It's a disgusting mess, people who live there are sick and tired of the climbers and their pollution.

    So the idea with the north route is to skip the danger of the ice fall in favour of a more gruelling climb to the top?

    No much helmets on to be seen. Baseball cap instead. That tells that risk awareness does not exist. Traffic jam is like in NY in slopes. Thats one of the reasons to high death rate. Horrible. This mountaneering has become a tourist trap.

    Those heli pilots are heroes too. In those altitudes of very thin air and heavy wind risks are high.

    So does the north face from China avoid the traffic jam after the Hilary step you get on the Nepal side? Do you summit same day as those teams? What if someone summits from the south.. then comes down your fixed lines on the north side? I have so many questions.

    • @eightsummits
      @eightsummits 5 місяців тому

      Yes, the Northeast Ridge avoids the traffic jams you see on the Southeast Ridge. Also, the North Approach in Tibet does not have the crowds you see on the South Approach in Nepal. Both the North Approach and the South Approach lead to the same summit. The teams don't summit on the same day. Climbers cannot complete a traverse of the mountain by going up the South Approach and down the North Approach, and vice versa. China will not allow climbers to enter or exit Tibet other than at recognized border points. i.e, the Friendship Bridge. For a comparison of the South Approach and the North Approach, view my video titled "Mt. Everest: South Approach and North Approach."

    Looks like a bunch of rich old farts. Kudos I guess. Serious question - why are guys huffing and puffing while breathing supplemental oxygen? Especially when you’re standing still? I could see gasping for air (or lack of) with no oxygen supplemented … and I understand exertion - I just don’t get breathing difficulties when laying in a tent with an oxygen mask on.
